Dishing it up with P.J. Jones

Today, I have the joy of dishing it up with PJ Jones!

PJ sits in front of a computer most of the day, writing, deleting, then writing some more, until her butt is numb and her brain is fried. Prior to becoming a full-time chair warmer, PJ Jones not-so-enjoyed a short stint as a journalist and then seven agonizing…eh blissful years as a high school English teacher.

JET: Thanks for joining me today PJ. Can you tell us about your new book, Driving Me Nuts!?

PJ: First off, THANKS J.E. for hosting me on your blog. I have a new release this month, Driving Me Nuts!, but it’s a dark comedy, NOT a parody like Romance Novel.

Smella Rosepetal must find a millionaire husband to finance her baby’s heart transplant. She flies home to her deputy father’s ranch in Pitchforks, Texas, where she falls in love with Deadward Forest, a wealthy environmentalist vampire.

When a deranged murderer is on the loose in Pitchforks, killing romance heroines, Deadward assumes Smella would be safer without him. Smella turns to her childhood friend, Snake Long, for comfort. But Snake doesn’t have the money to save her baby, so Smella places herself in peril in a desperate hunt for a rich husband.

Time is running out for Smella’s baby, and she must escape the Australian Outback, then face down Flabio, an overweight and disgruntled, aspiring cover model, plus enraged vampire wives and their homosexual, vampire, cowboy husbands, a jealous were-gerbil, James Bond, a drunk rodeo clown and Smella’s strange boyfriend who wants to drain her blood, yet is repulsed by her smell.

JET: What drew you to romantic parody?

PJ: I wrote Romance Novel when I was seriously ill. This was my form of comic relief. After getting lots of fan mail and great reviews, I decided to try my hand at a few more parodies.

JET: What’s been your most challenging hurdle on the road to publication?

PJ: Finding a publisher with a twisted enough sense of humor. When that didn’t work, then figuring out how to do it on my own.

JET: What was your favorite moment in the journey?

PJ: Getting great fan letters and reviews from some well-known romance review sites.

JET: Which authors had the most influence over you growing up?

PJ: I loved the classics, especially George Elliot’s The Mill on the Floss.

JET: When did you know you wanted to take the plunge into the writing world?

PJ: When I was nine and started my first magazine subscription, The Dirty Toilet Water Book. I had one subscriber.

JET: What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of book research? Most interesting fact you uncovered?

PJ: I rode on a Greyhound bus from Las Vegas to El Paso mostly to character watch. After being stranded in El Paso due to a snowstorm, I vowed to NEVER AGAIN ride a bus! Although, I did meet some interesting characters. I remember the bus picked up a man right after he was released from prison. We talked for about two hours before we reached his hometown. I was the first person he spoke to outside of prison in three years. My main character, Ruckus, in Driving Me Nuts! is loosely based on him.

JET: Of all the novels and stories you’ve written - which one is your favorite?

PJ: My favorite has to be Driving Me Nuts! This book is more from the heart. Funny yes, but there are some pretty deep moments. The struggles of my main characters as they found their way back to sanity, reminds me of my own journey back to health after suffering from a serious illness.

JET: Any advice (from a writer’s standpoint) for the novices out there?

PJ: Always strive to improve your craft. If you’ve been rejected countless times by editors or fail to final in writing competitions, take the comments made by the editors/judges to heart and learn how to strengthen your writing skills.

JET: All right - now that I’ve hammered you with the big questions, let’s tackle my favorite (and geeky) quick ten. . . starting with: Paper or Plastic?

PJ: I bring my own reusable bags to the supermarket.

JET: Steak or Tofu?

PJ: Steak!

JET: Beach or Mountains?

PJ: Tough decision but I’m more of a sunshine beach gal. I love to go skiing or sledding every now and then, but I’m always up for swimming.

JET: Country or Rock-n-Roll?

PJ: Right now, country, but it depends on my mood. I really love good classic rock when I’m feeling like a baaad girl.

JET: Leather or Lace?

PJ: Leather.

JET: Angels or Demons?

PJ: Can’t a nice girl play naughty, too?

JET: Paper or Digital?

PJ: Digital

JET: Silent Film Classics or Cheesy B Rated Horror?

PJ: Definitely cheesy!

JET: Twilight or True Blood?

PJ: Uhhhhh….Dodging tomatoes but NEITHER!

JET: Coffee or Tea?

PJ: Green tea with honey. I’m a dork, I know.

JET: Thank you for indulging me. Before we wrap this up, can you tell us what you're working on now? What's next?

PJ: I am taking a break right now and focusing on promoting my current books before I plunge into my next novels. I have a short Christmas story coming out in an anthology with my peeps, The Indie Eclective. I also plan to write another comedy and another parody this spring.

Thank you so much for taking the time to chat on my blog. Folks, you can find out more about P.J. Jones and her work at the following places:

Next week, I have Bob Stewart on tap talking about his new novel Hidden Evil.  I'll be picking a name from the folks that comment next week and giving away an e-copy of Bob's book to the winner next Friday!

Don't forget to swing in and say happy Halloween to Bob and I!

Until then,
Ciao

Katie Salidas One Day Book Blitz Tour

In honor of the release of Pandora’s Box, I’m letting Katie Salidas take over my blog for her One Day Book Blitz Tour…

When asked to write about a “day” in the life of a writer, I was stumped. I sat staring at the computer screen, watching the little cursor blink, mocking me as I wracked my brain, trying to recall what my “typical” day is like.

While writing is something I take very seriously and look at as my job, it almost never happens during the “day.” I can often be found bleary-eyed, late at night, clicking away at the keys of my laptop. Even us “Housewives” have day jobs. I’m a write-at-home-mom! The house doesn’t clean itself (oh God how I wish it did though), the laundry won’t fold itself … okay, you know where I’m going with this. Seriously though, daytime is when I work on the household stuff, do my critiquing group critiques and posts, and take care of business related things for Rising Sign Books.

As it is, the everyday minutia tends to take up the bulk of the daylight hours, leaving only the calm of the evening for me to “get a few words in.” Once my daughter is nestled all snug in her bed, that’s when the words spring out from my head.

So let’s start with that. I work nights. My shift starts promptly at 8pm. Until recently (we just found out we are expecting baby #2) I would crack open a can of redbull (the 12 oz one), open up my current manuscript, and get started. Now that baby #2 is on the way, that can of redbull has been exchanged for a more pregnancy-friendly beverage, water. And let me tell you, my writing production had gone way down since caffeine was removed from my diet. But, alas, we must soldier on!

8:30PM – While writing the start of a lusty scene between my two main characters, my email chimes. I’m a little OCD so I have to know what it is. (I know I should just leave my email closed… *sigh* I’ll never learn.) “Oooh Book Marketing tips. I need to know this!”

9:15PM – Email led to a quick pop over to facebook which led to a round of “poke wars” and three hundred updates. Whoops! I finally close both Thunderbird (email) and Firefox (internet) and realized I have only written one decent paragraph. Time to get back to work.

10:45PM – I need a synonym for ‘ethereal’ and a another bottle of water. After a quick stretch and run to the kitchen, I silently swear as I click open firefox. “only Thesaurus.com… no Facebook. No Twitter. No LinkedIn. No Myspace. No blogger…”

11:15PM - airy, celestial, spiritual, sublime, supernal, tenuous, unearthly, unworldly… See, I’m working. I wasn’t surfing the web. Promise.

11:30PM – Kiss Hubby goodnight. He reminds me to come to bed instead of falling asleep on the couch, no matter how late I finish work. (It’s a bit of a regular occurrence in our house) I swear I won’t fall asleep on the couch. “Scouts honor.”

12:00AM – Email chimes just as I finish up a rough draft on the lusty scene I’ve been working on. Perfect timing, an email from my critting buddy (many of them are up as late as me on a regular basis too). I’ll shoot over the pages I just wrote and see what they think.

12:30AM – Delete Delete Delete… Okay, bad Idea to send off something that rough. That scene was crap, but at least I heard it from a friend, right? Time to rewrite it and grab Redbull #2

12:35AM – Stare blankly at the ceiling, wondering if inspiration will strike. Oooh, was that my email again? Yay Facebook Updates! Oooh new Twitter followers. Awww, some poor man in Nigeria needs me to help him get his inheritance.

1:00AM –Maybe a change of location will help. It’s too late for a coffee shop but I’ve got a laptop I can at least get away from the desk. I hop over to the loveseat.

1:30AM – Back on track!! Words are flying from my fingers to the screen. Characters are falling madly in love. It’s getting hot and heavy in their bedroom… Boy, I use the word embrace a lot. I need a new word. Ut-oh… I silently swear as I click open Firefox. “only Thesaurus.com… no Facebook. No Twitter. No LinkedIn. No Myspace. No blogger…” I can be strong this time. I just know it.

2:30AM – How many versions of that farmer game are on Facebook now? Not that I was on Facebook… for that long. I mean, does the word snuggle sound too cute? What about nuzzle? Do vampires nuzzle? Hmmmm.

3:30AM – Things are really moving along. I’ve gotten 1k words into the rewrite on my love scene. Getting a little sleepy but I think I can hang until I get it finished.

7:00AM – Hubby wakes me up, looking very disappointed. I fell asleep on the couch again. Time to start another day. I promise I’ll sleep in my bed next time.

So there you have it, a typical day…er night… in my writing life. Thanks for reading, and if you want to check out my work, you can find me at http://www.katiesalidas.com/

Immortalis Carpe Noctem (Book 1)

Becoming a vampire is easy. Living with the condition... that's the hard part.

Bleeding to death after brutal mugging, twenty-five year old Alyssa is rescued by the most unlikely hero: the handsome and aloof vampire, Lysander.

His gift of immortal blood initiates Alyssa into a frightening, eternally dark world filled with: bloodlust, religious fanaticism, and thousand-year old vendettas.

With Lysander as her guide, Alyssa will have to learn what it takes to survive in the immortal world. She'll have to find the strength to accept her new reality and carpe noctem; or give in, and submit to final death.

Hunters & Prey (Book 2)

Becoming a vampire saved Alyssa from death, but the price was high: the loss of everything and everyone attached to her mortal life. She’s still learning to cope when a surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum’s most fearsome hunter, sends her fleeing back to the world she once knew, and Fallon, the friend she’s missed more than anything.

Alyssa breaks vampire law by revealing her new, true self to her old friend, a fact which causes strong division in the group that should support her most: her clan.

Pandora’s Box (Book 3)

After a few months as a vampire, Alyssa thought she’d learned all she needed to know about the supernatural world. But her confidence is shattered by the delivery of a mysterious package – a Pandora’s Box.

Seemingly innocuous, the box is in reality an ancient prison, generated by a magic more powerful than anyone in her clan has ever known. But what manner of evil could need such force to contain it?

When the box is opened, the sinister creature within is released, and only supernatural blood will satiate its thirst. The clan soon learns how it feels when the hunter becomes the hunted.

Powerless against the ancient evil, the clan flees Las Vegas for Boston, with only a slim hope for salvation. Could Lysander’s old journals hold the key? And what if they don’t?

And how welcome will they be in a city run by a whole different kind of supernatural being?

Werewolves…

Dishing it up with Sandra Edwards & her Incredible Dreams Kindle 3 Giveaway Tour

Today I have the pleasure of having Sandra Edwards on my blog today as part of her Incredible Dreams Kindle 3 Giveaway tour. Sandra is an award-winning author of romance. She has eclectic tastes, penning tales in a variety of genres such as paranormal (mostly time travel and reincarnation), contemporary and suspense. She lives in the U.S. (west coast) with her husband, two kids, four dogs and one very temperamental feline. Sandra's books often push the envelope and step outside the boundaries of conventional romance.

JET: Can you tell us about your most recent book, Vegas Baby?

Sandra: Vegas, Baby is the second book in the Soul Searchers series. It picks up where Broken Wings left off. While Broken Wings is, for the most part, Maggie and Tajan’s story, the second book is definitely Rio and Eddie’s story.

JET: What drew you to the paranormal and suspense genres?

Sandra: My muse’s writing tastes are as eclectic as my reading preference. Basically, I like to write in the same genres that I like to read.

JET: What’s been your most challenging hurdle on the road to publication?

Sandra: Getting traditional publishers to seriously consider my ‘outside the box’ stories.

JET: What was your favorite moment in the journey?

Sandra: Definitely fan mail. I love hearing from readers who’ve enjoyed a book of mine.

JET: Which authors had the most influence over you growing up?

Sandra: Rod Serling, Sidney Sheldon, Harold Robbins and Jackie Collins.

JET: When did you know you wanted to take the plunge into the writing world?

Sandra: I think it’s true for most writers that once you start writing, wanting to ‘take the plunge’ is a natural progression.

JET: What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of book research? Most interesting fact you uncovered?

Sandra: Craziest thing I’ve ever done in the name of research? – I’ll never tell . Most interesting fact...? I’ve run across lots of interesting tidbits over the years but one of the most interesting things I’ve run across was in some records from the 1800s, a woman’s children were willed away from her in her husband’s will.

JET: Of all the novels and stories you’ve written - which one is your favorite? Why?

Sandra: That’s like choosing a favorite child. lol. I love them all.

JET: Any advice (from a writer’s standpoint) for the novices out there?

Sandra: Never give up the dream.

JET: All right - now that I’ve hammered you with the big questions, let’s tackle my favorite (and geeky) quick ten. . . starting with: Paper or Plastic?

Sandra: Plastic

JET: Steak or Tofu?

Sandra: Steak

JET: Beach or Mountains?

Sandra: Beach

JET: Country or Rock-n-Roll?

Sandra: Rock-n-roll

JET: Leather or Lace?

Sandra: lace

JET: Angels or Demons?

Sandra: Sinners are much more fun. lol

JET: Paper or Digital?

Sandra: digital (I’m a Kindle girl :)

JET: Silent Film Classics or Cheesy B Rated Horror?

Sandra: I’d toss both those choices for old black-and-white movies.

JET: Twilight or True Blood

Sandra: Can’t say that I know much of anything about either.

JET: Coffee or Tea?

Sandra: Tea

JET: Thank you for indulging me and thank you so much for taking the time to chat on my blog. Before we wrap this up, can you tell us where we can find out more about you and your books?

Sandra: For more info on my books, and to read generous excerpts, please visit my website at: http://sandrawrites.com/

May Releases and a Blog Tour & Giveaway Announcement!

Hi folks, I know it’s not quite May yet but I’ve got blog tour announcements for May and my guest schedule list here as well as a couple releases to highlight from my Backspace brethren & fellow Kindle Authors.

Let’s start with the releases for May…

Betty Carlton – The Kincaid Way

The Kincaid Way is the story of the Kincaid Men.

Brian Kincaid: the sheriff of Paradise. Who after years of

being a widower he finally meets Ellen a woman that shakes his world up. Only she's not impressed with him. Yet!

Matt Kincaid: the son of Charles from Mine Alone. He was not going to keep with the family tradition of training Patsy, the love of his life, to be in absolute submission to him. Until she disregarded his wishes.

Come along and enjoy finding out if there is such a thing as 'Happy Ever After' for them.

S.M. Reine – Six Moon Summer - April 29, 2011

Rylie's parents are going through a messy divorce. They send her to summer camp to get her out of the way of their fighting lawyers, but she's just as miserable at the girls' camp as she was at home-- there's nothing vegetarian for her to eat at the mess hall, she hates hiking and archery, and the other campers taunt Rylie mercilessly.

One night, the bullying goes too far, and Rylie runs away. She doesn't get far. It's a full moon, and she isn't alone in the forest. A wild animal mauls her. She's certain she won't survive.

Instead of dying, she wakes up unharmed in her cabin the next morning. The only sign that something has changed are the healed scars on her chest, her increasingly keen senses, and her sudden craving for raw, bloody meat. A boy from the other camp seems to know what's happening to her, but Rylie isn't sure if she can trust herself with Seth.

Rylie soon learns that she only has until the end of summer before she becomes just like the monster that attacked her: a man-eating werewolf hungry for human flesh. Unless she can find a cure, she's only six moons away from transforming forever and losing her life to the hunger...

Shannon Duffy – Stormy Knight: Prom Queen of the Undead - May 1, 2011

High school is never easy--homework, peer pressure, dating--and that is no exception for the students at Littleton High; especially one student in particular named Stormy Knight who's a half vampire queen and half mortal being struggling to find her place in the human world.

Overall, Stormy thinks she's doing a pretty decent job of fitting in, at least until the undead begin popping up around her school and her mom, Candi the Vampire Queen (who enjoys eating ghosts way too much), suddenly decides to start dropping into her life too.

With all of the chaos that ensues, Stormy soon realizes that it's up to her and her friends, Marco and Corey, to figure out who's bringing back the dead--but will Stormy, blessed with super-human powers, be able to decide between what's morally right and what she's willing to sacrifice soon enough to stop the ghosts before they take over the world?!
