June White - Deal With The Devil

Deal With The Devil

By June White

Most of us have heard of the story of Faust or some variation of it. Faust unhappy with his life and the limited things he has makes a deal with the devil. An arrangement where he wants more from life and exchanges his soul, (his moral integrity) to achieve the things he longs for and are out of reach for him. He cares more about power, success and worldly pleasures and is willing to trade his soul to have them.

If this were truly an option for you to choose today how many would take the deal? If offered all the things money and power could provide you in your life now and for the next 24 years would you think it worth the final outcome? The final outcome being eternal damnation, your soul spending eternity in the fires of hell.

In this situation there is no debate over whether heaven and hell exist. The devil has approached Faust and offered him everything he could possibly want while alive; would you consider it? Would you take a determined amount of time on earth with unlimited money, power, and success?

The difference with this tale and people today who have attained these things in their life; money, power and success, is many of them don't carry a strong faith and believe there is a heaven or hell. That what they have and do now is all there is, no consequences for their actions, once given to the earth that is our end. So at what cost are we willing to attain these things? Money, houses, cars and other material possessions may be part of your life but is integrity, character and a sense of duty worth more than all of that? Should you take time to make a difference, to realize and understand relationships are more important than accomplishments if you've allowed those to take a back seat to material possessions. That a persons character is worth much more than power, money and success.

At what point is the cost too great?

I know from personal experience what my answer would be.

Deidre Havrelock - Mistakes In Beginner Writers

What are the mistakes you see in beginner writers?

By Deidre Havrelock

Ha! I guess we should start with the ones I made: sending material out before it’s done, lack of proofreading, lack of patience. Patience is the big one, though. Writing takes time. You have to re-write and edit. You have to read things over and over. You have to be sure about what you’re trying to say.

I originally sold my book Saving Mary: The Possession (under a different title) to a large publishing house (back in 2002/03). Looking back, I see that I had originally sold a first draft; and as the publishing process chugged along, I became more and more uncomfortable about my book being released. It simply wasn’t finished, at least not in the way I meant for it to be done. My lack of focus (I personally think) transferred to the publishing house and I was soon faced with a problem: what I had meant to be a “personal memoir” had somehow turned into “Christian fiction.” Eventually I was allowed out of my contract so that I could rework the book as true memoir. You see, I had changed my name (and the names of most people in the book) simply because I was uncomfortable with being in a book (I figured other people might be just as uncomfortable).

I didn’t think this would be a problem since “A rose is a rose, by any other name.” But it was. First of all, you simply can’t be uncomfortable with being in a book if you want to write a memoir. You just have to get over yourself. This is your life: your experiences, your friends, your view. You have to own it. The second problem was that the author of A Million Little Pieces had just been scolded by Oprah for not sticking to the rules of memoir. My publisher wanted to take no chances and so they switched my book to “fiction.” Without consulting me. So, with all this being said, make sure you finish your book, staying true to the vision you see and hear in your head.

The other big mistake I see writers making is showing their work to the wrong people. Not everyone should critique your work. Not everyone believes you can succeed as a writer. And too many opinions can confuse a new writer. Figure out what you want to say and then work at saying it as best you can.

The Death Chronicles Book One: Don't Fear the Reaper

Novel Concept Publishing, LLC's newest release: Don't Fear the Reaper is now available on Amazon.

The day Nick Ramsay’s eighth-grade teacher drops dead in his classroom, Nick sees his first reaper. When another cloaked figure appears at his grandmother’s bedside, Nick issues an order for the vile creature to leave her alone.

This simple act of defiance creates a domino effect that brings Fate and Death to Nick’s door and reveals his true lineage, throwing his world into chaos. To make matters worse, a group of rogue reapers declares war on humanity and Nick is the only one who can stop them.

Excerpt From Don't Fear the Reaper:

The first time I saw a reaper, I thought I had fallen asleep in class again.

Mr. Sanchez was in the middle of reaming out Clyde for not having his homework for the hundredth time this year and mid-yell, his red face turned purple and he clutched his chest. When Mr. Sanchez fell to his knees, the sight of the black cloaked figure behind him nearly gave me a heart attack. My chest burned with the sudden rush of adrenaline and my throat tingled around the scream that begged to erupt, but I clamped my lips closed.

His silver gaze peered out of the hooded darkness, staring directly at me, like he knew I could see him. His bony hand reached out and came to rest on Mr. Sanchez’s head. The rotund teacher’s grey eyes rolled back and his breath wheezed from his half-open mouth.

“Call nine-one-one!” The cry broke my paralysis and I bolted to the front of the room, trying to recall the CPR instructions I had in health class last year. Thirty chest compressions then blow in the victim’s mouth. The silent instructions replayed in my head and I went into action.

It wasn’t until the E.M.T.s wheeled the dead body of Mr. Sanchez out of the room that Julia took my hand for support.

“Nick, you tried,” Julia said.

I looked into her golden brown eyes and that’s when I knew it wasn’t a dream. Her warm hand, her soft, teary voice, cracked through my defenses and I started to shake. “I couldn’t stop him from taking Mr. Sanchez.”

“Stop who?”

I opened my mouth to speak but before the words could tumble out, I snapped my lips closed. She was already looking at me like I had a few screws loose and this would only topple that look into the realm of disbelief. I didn’t want her to think I was any crazier than she already did. I turned away, wiping my misting eyes on my sleeve.

“Stop who?” she repeated, taking my arm and swinging me toward her.

“Death, who do you think?” I snapped, my tone harsher than I wanted, harsher than I meant to be and she recoiled. “I couldn’t stop death,” I said, softening my tone and taking a deep breath to cool my nerves. “I couldn’t stop Mr. Sanchez from dying.”

Before she could speak, the PA system whined into action. “Dylan Nicholas Ramsay, please come to the office.”

Aw, crap. What does Principal Murdock want now? I hung my head, grinding my teeth together for a moment as anger wiped away any trace of despair. “I gotta go,” I said to Julia and stepped out of her grip, trudging toward the office wondering just what Principal Murdock was going to lay on me this time. Was he going to throw that sappy sad expression at me again, the one that always made me feel like a lost reject? The look that made me feel like crap.

Mr. Murdock offered a tight smile when I entered the office. “Nick, how are you holding up?”

Jeesh, how the hell do you think I’m holding up? I just saw my teacher die. “I’m fine, sir.”

“I think you should talk with Mrs. Lambert for a spell,” Mr. Murdock said and delivered the look I expected.

“I said I’m okay.”

Mr. Murdock raised one of his wooly-mammoth eyebrows. “I understand you were yelling the entire time you were trying to revive Mr. Sanchez.”

Shock slammed into my chest, drying my mouth and shooting tingling waves over my skin. “Wh-what?”

“A few of the other students said you were yelling at someone or something while you were doing CPR.”

“I, uh, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I knew I was cussing the hell out of the reaper, but I didn’t realize I was swearing out loud.

The interrogation of SSA Ellie Conway & SSA Doctor Kurt Henderson

I am SSA Ellie Conway and the guy who looks a bit like Kevin Costner is SSA Doctor Kurt Henderson. We’re special agents with the FBI, in particular we’re half of Delta A. Delta A is a specialist team that predominately investigates serial crime.I’m the main character in The _Byte Series novels by Cat Connor and Kurt, Lee and Sam are my trusty sidekicks… probably best they don’t hear me say that though.

In March 2012 the fourth Byte novel by Cat Connor, FLASHBYTE, was released by Rebel e Publishers. I guess we’re here because Flashbyte has a lot to do with us, more so than Lee and Sam (who are the rest of Delta A). For me personally, Flashbyte, was a total mind fuck, I’m sure Kurt will agree with that. The cases we dealt with have left a lasting impression on us all. One of us nearly didn’t make it, you’ll have to read the book to find out who.

We thought it would be interesting (maybe) if we asked each other the same questions Cat likes to ask other unsuspecting folk. Not sure how this will turn out but let’s give it a go!

Comfy?

Ellie: What’s your favorite meal, Doc?
Kurt: Just about everything my mom used to make. I’m a guy. I eat what’s put in front of me. Similar to you Conway.
Ellie: I’m not a guy.
Kurt: I know. Trust me I know. I meant we’re similar in our eating habits.

Kurt: Here’s one for you Conway, it’s perfect. Describe your current mental status.
Ellie: I don’t think I can. That blinding grin reflecting off your face is very off-putting, Doc.
Okay, my current mental status is stable.
Kurt: Really, you’re going with stable?
Ellie: Uh huh. Problem?
Kurt: I think you should go with mentally hilarious.
Ellie: Yeah, well, you’re not me.

Ellie: Doc, do you have a favorite coffee or tea?
Kurt: Not really. I do like both. I’ve been trying to get Conway to drink more tea and less coffee. No luck so far.

Kurt: Conway, try andwalk these poor people through a typical day for Delta.
Ellie: Do we ever have a typical day? Let me think, how about the day I woke up dead? Nah, not really typical. Okay, Just recently, the day you and I headed to Lexington to investigate a spate of deaths in a hospital.
Kurt: Do you even remember that day?
Ellie: Good point, my memory of our recent trip to Lexington is sketchy. Excuse me while I take this opportunity to point out that you can all find out what happened in Lexington by reading Flashbyte.
Kurt: Smooth, Conway, real smooth.
Ellie: As for a typical Delta day… it starts early, runs late, and involves a lot of paperwork. Sometimes, in between the early start and late finish things blow up, people shoot at us, and the shit hits the fan.
Kurt: What do you mean sometimes?

Kurt: Hand gun or rifle, Conway?
Ellie: Hey, that’s two questions for me in a row, Doc.
Once I would’ve said hand gun all the way, but now, I’m quite comfortable with both. I doubt I’ll ever be a really good sniper, I’m not patient enough. But damn picking up a rifle every now and then is fun.

Ellie: Are you left handed or right handed, Doc?
Kurt: Left-handed for most things, right for some.
Ellie: You going to share what most and some are?
Kurt: Not what you think… let me rephrase, predominately left-handed. That’s all you’re getting.

Kurt: How many times a day do you check your twitter stream, Conway?
Ellie: Not as many as I used too, not since the #wheresmymail killer. But I do still use Twitter, I’m just more careful with my use of hash tags these days.

Ellie: Name the top four things on your bucket list, Doc.
Kurt: You’re using this as a fact finding mission, nice Conway, real nice.
I don’t think I can share the top thing on my bucket list, so moving down the list we have.
     2. A vacation in New Zealand - I didn’t see enough when we were there a year or so ago.
     3. Get my pilots license.
     4. Runaway and join the circus.

Ellie: Kurt, what is the most random thing you have ever done?
Kurt: Joined Delta A. It’s not for everyone.

Kurt: If you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?
Ellie: That’s easy. Spending time with my daughter and Rowan, and we also have Delta A dinners every week - that obviously depends on us not being away or whatever. We do try to get together socially at someone’s place on a Sunday. It’s nice to kick back and have some fun with the team and our families.

Ellie: Kurt, Whiskey or Bourbon?
Kurt: Whiskey, single malt.

Kurt: Ellie, what are you carrying in your pockets and on your person, right now?
Ellie: One moment while I empty my pockets… a tin of mints; a packet of tissues; a keychain with keys, flash drives, and SD cards attached; a safety pin; my credentials and badge.
That’s it for my pockets.
On my belt I’m wearing a Glock 17, two extra magazines, and handcuffs-both steel and plasticuffs.

Ellie: Ebook or tree book, Kurt?
Kurt: Depends. I don’t have a preference. When we’re traveling, eBooks are easier. At home I read both.

Ellie: Kurt, favorite apocalyptic scenario?
Kurt: Working with you Conway, I suspect you’re one of the horsemen of the apocalypse.
Ellie: If I’m one then you, Lee and Sam are the other three.
Kurt: Damn!
Ellie: I always thought of us as Musketeers. This horsemen of the Apocalypse thing is disturbing - now I’ll spend the rest of the day trying to figure out which one of us belongs to which horse. I have a nasty feeling mine won’t be the white one.

That’s about it from us… there is a real danger that Kurt’s apocalypse thoughts will get deep and meaningful - no one wants that! If you’d like to find out more about us we feature in killerbyte, terrorbyte, exacerbyte and Flashbyte. Our books are available in all eFormats and in paperback worldwide.

Idiosyncrasies and getting older…

Welcome to another stop on the blog tour – and oh look, it’s on my blog!

My subject today has nothing to do with writing and publishing, and I’m sure most everyone out there can identify with this in some way. I’ve noticed as I get older that some of my smaller idiosyncrasies seem to have grown into the realm of ridiculous. Like having the light switch bank all facing the same way (either all up or all down) – when I was younger, I didn’t obsess over this at all. If I had five switches in various states, I didn’t care. But now, it irks me to the point if I see it, I have to fix it. A little obsessive/compulsive – yeah – I think more so now than ever before.

Let me share another situation and understand, I was able to see humor in this after my initial meltdown – but the sheer fact that I freaked made both my husband and daughter fall into hysterics. We have an “extra” phone – it’s one of those cheap cordless phones that really sucks – thus the reason why it’s “extra”. Now, my husband found it on his cleaning binge this weekend and decided to replace the phone on my nightstand with this cheap piece of you know what. Not only did the phone suck – but it also had a bright light on the base when the phone was in the charger. Not what you want next to your head when you like to sleep with black out shades.

So when I went to bed (after 11pm on a Sunday night) – I freaked. I wanted to know where my touch button phone was – I had the thing since I was sixteen and it is the ONLY phone that works in a power outage. To add to the fire – even if I knew where he put the thing, I couldn’t just put it back because the wall outlet is behind our bed. A big-ass-king-size-sleigh-bed that I can’t move.

So I went on a muttering rant until hubby came up and I laid into him. What did he do? Laugh. Laugh and laugh some more and then he put back the old phone – while laughing at me.

That was when I realized just how much change irritates me – which isn’t such a good outlook. After all, I read Who Moved My Cheese and latched onto the mantra Change is Good for so many years in the business realm – but now that changes are hitting close to home – I’m not the Change Agent I thought I was.

Hopefully this isn’t something that’s indicative to aging because if it is, I’m screwed. ;)

Where am I going with this? I think it comes back to balance. A person that successfully balances their life between work, family and fun time doesn’t stress over the little changes like a phone on their nightstand. I used to roll with it – which tells me that I need to find balance before the obsessive – compulsive behavior takes over and I can’t react appropriately to such inconsequential situations.

Well, we could all use a little diversion from reality, so if you’re game, take a look at my new release, Crystal Illusions.

Assistant D.A. Carolyn Hastings has an uncanny knack for putting away criminals. With one of the best prosecution records in recent history, her future as Manhattan’s next District Attorney looks certain. But her sixth sense for winning cases threatens to work against her when she starts seeing a string of murders through the eyes of the killer.

With suspects piling up as fast as bodies, and the motives of those closest to her questionable, Carolyn doesn’t know who to trust. When the FBI assigns Special Agent Steve Williams to the case, Carolyn discloses her deepest fear - that the man she loves may be the one responsible for the city’s latest crime spree.

The only thing Steve knows for sure is Carolyn has an inexplicable psychic connection with the killer, and all the victims have one thing in common…a striking resemblance to Carolyn Hastings.

And he knows it’s only a matter of time before this psychopath knocks on her door.

Crystal Illusions praise: “Taylor has a strong thriller where every single character has reasonable doubt flashing like a neon sign hanging over them, and right from the beginning you are trying to guess who the killer really is. Gripping, rich and magnificent - crime whodunnits don't get any better than this!” Author Poppet / Gemma Rice – Author of Quislings, Blindsided, Djinn and Dusan

Thanks for swinging into this stop on my Blog Tour and I hope you’ll stop in at Bitten By Books on the 20th for a chance to win a $50.00 Amazon gift certificate and if you’d like to check out Crystal Illusions, you can purchase it here on Amazon.

Manic Monday with Roseanne Dowell

Welcome to a special Manic Monday – today I have an excerpt from multi-published author, Roseanne Dowell. She was a former school secretary and writing instructor, is an avid reader and writes various types of romance – paranormal, contemporary and mystery.

Designed for Love

Fate, kismet, or whatever you want to call it, it turned Interior Designer, Wendy Seidel’s world upside down. From a chance meeting at the airport to Florida and back to Ohio, she can’t believe the strange circumstances that throw her and Bill Johnson together, after he literally knocks her off her feet at the airport.

Find Roseanne's titles here

Excerpt from Designed for Love:

“What the hell?” My carry-on bag slid across the floor and slammed into the wall. My feet slipped out from under me, I landed flat on my back, and someone fell on top of me, pinning me to the floor. The breath knocked out of me, I lay still a moment.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I finally caught my breath and pushed him off. “Everyone’s always in such a big hurry.”

“Why’d you slow down? You darned near stopped in front of me.” He stood up, brushed himself off and held out his hand to help me up. “Sorry.”

I knocked his hand away, got to my knees and stood. I didn’t need his help. Not his or anyone else’s for that matter. What I needed was to find my bag and get on to my gate.

“Look, I’m sorry. It was entirely my fault. I shouldn’t have been in such a hurry.” He held his hand out to me again, but I ignored it. “Here, let me get that for you.” He hurried to pick up my bag, but I grabbed it first.

“Look, Mister, I have a plane to catch, so excuse me if I don’t have time to chat.” I straightened up my bag, grabbed the handle and started toward my gate. Good looking in a rustic sort of way, I had to admit. Probably worked outdoors or at least spent a lot of time outside. Not that it made any difference. I didn’t have time for him. Or any man for that matter. I had a career to build, and men didn’t figure into it.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like men. I did. Even dated occasionally. Eventually I’d like to have a relationship, even get married. But relationships and marriage took time, not a priority right now. My career came first. Something about him, though.

I couldn’t resist looking back. Great. He stood watching me with a silly smirk on his face. Nice eyes, soft gray. I loved gray eyes. Maybe because my grandfather had gray eyes. He lifted his hand and waved at me. Heat burned my face, and I hurried off in the direction of the gate, looking at the signs above. Only at Gate 2. Not even close. Of course my gate was at the farthest end of the airport. Thankfully, there was plenty of time to get there.

I avoided a heavyset man, hell bent on his mission. I hated this time of year. Everyone was in such a big hurry.

To make matters worse, my butt hurt but I resisted rubbing it. Didn’t need to look like any more of an idiot. Ah, Gate 11, finally. Now I could sit down and relax, since there was still forty-five minutes before my flight. I took a book out of the side pocket of my carry-on and settled back to wait. Not that I could concentrate, anger at my boss raged inside me. Who in their right mind set up a meeting with a client right before New Years? And in Florida, no less. Obviously, Nick didn’t care that I had plans for New Year’s Eve.

So I was getting out of Ohio, big deal. Sure, my friends thought I was lucky, especially with the predicted snowstorm. Didn’t make any difference to me, I liked snow.

I glanced out a window. Already it was coming down pretty heavy, and there was still a good half hour before my flight.

Damn it, I hated flying. I could have sent the samples just as easy. What was so important they required me to personally bring them? I thought we’d settled everything before the client left. Why the sudden change? They could have at least waited until after the holidays.

Nick, my boss, promised I’d be home by New Year’s Eve. Yeah right. I knew how these things went. First this problem, than that one. I’d be lucky to be home in time for my nephew’s birthday on the sixth. Nick better not have any funny ideas. This was strictly business. I’d heard about his reputation with women. So far he hadn’t shown an interest in me, and I certainly didn’t have a problem with that. Good-looking though Nick was, nothing about him attracted me. Definitely not my type. Not that I had a type.

“Looks like we’re on the same flight,” a masculine voice said.

I looked up and almost groaned out loud. This couldn’t be happening. What were the chances we’d be on the same flight? I tried to ignore him, but something drew my eyes to his.

“Bill Johnson.” He extended his hand toward me. “I really am sorry about knocking you down.”

I shrugged and shook his hand. “No problem.” A quiver started deep in my stomach when he held my hand a bit longer than necessary. Rough, calloused hands. Does hard work. Maybe construction. I pulled my hand away and turned my attention back to my book. I hated talking to people at airports. Lord, please tell me he doesn’t have the seat next to me. I couldn’t be that unlucky, could I?

Of course I could.

Taking a peek at the ticket sticking out of his coat pocket, I groaned. Seat 16A. No way, what were the chances? I hoped he’d take the hint and leave me alone.

“Are you staying in Fort Myers?” He sat down next to me.

Figured, no such luck. I nodded. Maybe if I didn’t contribute to the conversation, he’d go away. I kept my eyes on my book but couldn’t concentrate. I had the irresistible urge to look at him, but ignored it. What was it about him?

“Visiting or business?”

I looked up from my book. He just wasn’t going to quit. “Business, no time for pleasure.” Maybe that would shut him up.

He smiled. “Everyone has time for pleasure. All work and no play...” He let the rest of the saying hang.

I put the book in front of my face. “I guess I’m a dull boy then.” Why didn’t he just let me read in peace. I couldn’t be much ruder. Some people just couldn’t take a hint.

Bill laughed. A big hearty laugh that caused people to stare. I wanted to crawl under my seat. “What’s so funny?”

“Honey, you look like anything but a boy.” His gaze took me in from top to bottom and came to rest on my breasts.

Okay, I’m well endowed and wished I had left my jacket on. Not that there was much to see through my bulky sweater, but enough. Heat rushed to my face again. Crap, why did I blush so easily? My face was probably as red as my hair. “Okay, so I don’t look like a boy. Just finishing the saying. And DON’T call me honey!” I put the book in front of my face, turned away from him, and tried to read. Lord, spare me friendly people. Especially men.

The last thing I needed was a man trying to pick me up. I wished he’d just go away. I could call airport security, but didn’t want to cause a scene. He’d done enough of that.

“Since you won’t tell me your name, I don’t know what else to call you.”

“Don’t call me anything.” I slammed my book shut, stood, and walked to the window. What more did I have to do to let him know I wasn’t interested? I stared out the window. Things didn’t look good outside.

“Full blown blizzard.” Bill’s deep voice came from behind.

I felt his breath on my neck and shivered from the warmth of it. Or was it from his nearness? Whatever it was, I didn’t like it. I looked at my watch. Still almost a half hour before take off. So far they hadn’t cancelled the flight.

As if my thoughts magically conjured it up, a voice came over the PA system. “We regret to inform you that all flights to and from Cleveland Hopkins Airport have been cancelled until further notice. New flights can be rebooked as soon as we resume our schedule. Sorry for the inconvenience. Airport shuttles are standing by to take you to a hotel. If you can’t get a room, you’re welcome to stay at the airport. Concession stands and restaurants will remain open for your convenience.

Great, just great. What more could go wrong? At least I could go home. If I could get a cab, that is. With the way it looked outside, I had a feeling most of the roads were closed, too.

I moved away from Bill and took my cell phone from my purse, got the number for the cab company from information, and punched it in. Crap, a recording. “No cabs due to weather.” Terrific. I punched in information for the number of the Sheraton Hotel. Hopefully, they still had a room. Spending the night sleeping in an airport wouldn’t improve my mood.

“Sheraton Hotel, how can I help you,” a female answered.

“Yes, I’d like a room for the night.” Please don’t tell me they’re all booked, I prayed. I didn’t care what kind of room as long as it had a bed.

“Yes, I have one room left. Two double beds. One hundred and fifty dollars.”

I let out a low whistle. A bit more than I cared to spend, but no matter. “I’ll take it.” I read my credit card number, grabbed my bag and raced to the exit while I spoke. Now to find an airport shuttle. Talk about luck, a shuttle parked just outside. I pulled the door open, and someone bumped into me.

“We have to stop meeting like this.”

I turned and looked into familiar soft, gray eyes. “Are you following me?” This was beginning to feel creepy. What was with this guy?

“Don’t flatter yourself.” Bill let out a low chuckle. “We can share a ride if you don’t mind. Give the driver a break.”

He followed me into the car. “Sheraton Hotel and...” He looked at me. “Where to?”

What were the odds he’d be going to the same hotel? This was getting scary. “Sheraton.”

“No kidding. Hey, maybe we can get together for a drink or something.”

Like I couldn’t guess what the or something was. I shook my head. Jerk. What made him think I’d even want to have a drink with him? “No thanks, I have work to do.” I looked out the window. How the driver managed to see where he was going was beyond me. All I could see was white. Thick, white, blowing snow. This was by far the worst snow storm I remembered. I just hoped it let up by morning like the weatherman promised.
